Kwoon Philosophy

DSC03826 copyOur primary focus is on realistic combat and self defense training for personal protection in preference to sports or performance based martial arts. The philosophy behind the programs offered at the Hung Fa Kwoon of Arizona comes from traditional Chinese Kung Fu Culture. This requires developing the whole person in body, mind and spirit. In particular the training methodology applied adheres to the concepts, principles and philosophy of the Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun System.  The result is a capable, confident and well balanced martial artist able to cope physically and mentally with the trials and tribulations of the modern world.

“Understanding ones true identity through
harmony of time, space and energy”

Physically, the HFY Wing Chun practitioner has a stable neutral base and trains both sides of the body equally with no preference for either, thus negating a dominant side or tendencies. From this neutral position and through constant drilling with partners the student learns how to recognize the reality of close quarter combat through the universal laws of Time, Space and Energy. The student therefore can efficiently and effectively respond to all challenges. The mindfulness and effort required to achieve proficiency forges the harmony of body, mind and spirit that transfers to all facets of the student’s life.

In the Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun lineage there are many Kuen Kuit (fist sayings), phrases which serve to convey the essence of the theory and strategy of the art to the student. The following example refers to the Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun formula and reminds the student of the importance of knowing oneself fully in order to fully know ones opponent.
